Christchurch city has several microbreweries offering tours and a chance to sample some of the region’s award-winning beers. There is also an eclectic choice of bars and night spots throughout the city that are redefining themselves after the earthquakes in 2011. Check out the range of experiences on offer in Christchurch to suit all beer enthusiasts – from the brewery virgins to the crafting geeks.
Cassels & Sons’ Brewery and restaurant - just off the main routes from Lyttelton and Sumner - is well-known throughout Christchurch for their craft beer and gourmet pizzas. Their beers are brewed on-site and you can pop along for a tasting as well as a look into the inner workings of the brewery where a wood-fired copper kettle concocts the famous brews.
As well as festivals and premium beer tastings, there are many beer tours on offer around the Christchurch region. Scoff & Quaff offer the city’s premier craft beer tours with adventures through craft breweries as well as local pubs. Their motto is “you drink, we drive” which is a pretty good way to do it. Craft Beer Tours and Three Boys Brewery also offer tours and the opportunity to get up close and personal with the local brewing heavyweights.
Many of the bars and pubs around Christchurch feel quintessentially English in style and appeal, reminiscent of the European settlers that established the city in the 1800’s. Following the earthquakes in 2011 the city took a more modern turn owing to its rebuilding, and now many establishments such as Pomeroys Pub are a unique blend of this old and new.
The Laboratory and The Twisted Hop are also very well-known in Christchurch and offer quality craft beers on tap from the local Twisted Hop Brewery. Alternatively, check out the Dux Central – its exposed brick walls and industrial décor make it feel like a kiwi import straight outta London.
The Great Kiwi Beer Festival is a celebration of New Zealand’s unique brewing history and is held annually in Christchurch’s Hagley Park. Throughout the day you can sample over 300 regional, national and international brews and quiz onsite masters about the tales behind their favorite brands. Match this with live performances, cooking demonstrations, seminars and tasting experiences and the Great Kiwi Beer Festival becomes the ultimate toast to local foodie culture.
