The scenic 92 km, three hour journey between Wellington and Picton has been described by Wine Spectator magazine as "one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world” and when you travel on Interislander you will be experiencing one of New Zealand’s most iconic tourist experiences. This year we celebrate our 50th anniversary of carrying passengers from Wellington the coolest little capital in the world to Picton the gateway to the south island.

Our three ships provide a wide choice of travel times and each provide their own unique experiences. Kaitaki is the largest in our fleet with the capacity to carry 1650 passengers and 600 vehicles, in fact she is the largest registered ship in New Zealand waters! If you are travelling with kids they will love Kaitaki’s two storey adventure playground. Aratere is our newly refurbished ship, we even cut her in half and added an extra 30 metres which was a major engineering feat and now makes her a whopping 183 metres long. Our third ship Arahura is the longest serving ship in our fleet and a local favourite.

All ships offer bar and café facilities, movie theatres, shop, Wi-Fi, nurseries and play facilities onboard. Bands often play in Karori Rip bar on Kaitaki - so keep an ear out! For those that would like a bit of a snooze you can also book a cabin onboard Kaitaki.

Premium Plus lounges are the most luxurious way to travel between the islands.  Available on Kaitaki and Aratere, Premium Plus offers complimentary food and beverages, free internet access, and comfortable seating as well as a range of magazines and newspapers.  The lounges are restricted to passengers aged 18 years and over, so if you don’t have kids, this is definitely the right choice.

No matter how you are travelling on land, Interislander will provide you an unforgettable experience over water.  We look forward to welcoming you aboard.
