80kms approx, with the alternate route (**) it is 116kms.
This route is used in an annual bike ride held every November. The event was started in the 1980's and is organised and run by the Fitzherbert Lions Club of Palmerston North. All the proceeds from this event go to local charity and community projects. Each year more than 1,000 cyclists take part in the event.
Getting there:
From The Square head West on Main Street, this becomes Napier Road. Follow this road through to Ashhurst where you need to go left onto Cambridge Ave. Take a left onto Oxford Street which becomes Colyton Road.
Follow along Colyton Road until you come to Kimbolton Road (State highway 54.) Turn Right onto Kimbolton Road and follow right up to Cheltenham. At Cheltenham you will come to an intersection with the Cheltenham Hotel on the corner.
**Turn left at this intersection, onto Cheltenham-Hunterville road. Take the next left onto McKays Line and follow this through to Makino Road, where you need to turn left. Continue along Makino Road right into Feilding.
** At the end of Makino Road there is a junction, where you need to take a sharp right then sharp left which will put you on Leithbridge Street. Follow Leithbridge Street through, this then becomes Aorangi Street, which in turn becomes Aorangi Road then Waughs Road.
At the next junction on Waughs road, you need to go left to follow into Campbell Road which takes you to Bunnythorpe. In Bunnythorpe, head straight through the roundabout and then take the right bend onto Stoney Creek Road. Follow Stoney Creek Road through to Napier Road, where you need to turn right.
Follow Napier Road back through to The Square in Palmerston North City.
**For a longer ride, try the Tour de Manawatu 116km route. Follow the instructions up to Cheltenham, but instead of turning off, continue North on Kimbolton Road up to Haynes Line. Turn left into Haynes Line, follow this road through the intersection and then through to the left (Haynes Line is not a straight road so follow carefully.)
Turn left into Beaconsfield Vallery Road, then right into Cheltenham Hunterville Road (State highway 54.) Take a left onto Williamson Road. Turn left onto Dunnolly Road. Go right, onto Short Road, then another right onto Makino Road.
Follow this road and then take a right onto Makino Road. Follow Makino Road into Feilding and from here you can follow the same directions from the 80km route.**
Things to see and do:
