What We Do
Tourism New Zealand’s role is to market New Zealand off-shore as a desirable visitor destination, to New Zealand’s target market. This is done through the 100% Pure New Zealand marketing campaign.
Tourism New Zealand has about 120 staff, approximately half of which work in overseas offices in places such as London, Los Angeles, Sydney, Mumbai, Tokyo, Shanghai and Singapore.
Everything Tourism New Zealand does incorporates the 100% Pure New Zealand message.
Consumer Marketing and Online Presence
The Marketing team, based in Auckland, work on the campaign. Components include advertising, which takes place in our key markets of Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, China and Japan.
The internet also plays an important role, with a suite of sites based around the website targeted at potential visitors - www.newzealand.com
In the 2008 calendar year, there were on average 900,000 user sessions per month. Average user sessions increased by 95 per cent in 2008 compared with 2007 when there were on average 460,000 user sessions.
For year end March 2009, there were on average 1,100,000 user sessions per month, a substantial increase (121%) on the previous year ended March, which had on average 500,000 user sessions.
The increase is driven up in particular by the high number of Chinese users in February and March as a result of 100% Pure New Zealand campaign activity in the market.
Other websites are targeted at overseas travel trade, overseas media, and overseas media and trade needing photographs to promote New Zealand through their business.
International Media and Events
The International Media Programme is also an important tool in encouraging potential visitors to come to New Zealand.
Media coverage is one of the most credible ways of conveying information about New Zealand, and Tourism New Zealand’s IMP team work with our offshore offices to help journalists with story ideas, develop itineraries, and bring them to New Zealand to experience it for themselves. Visit www.media.newzealand.com for more information.
The events team works on creating and linking with targeted existing events to promote New Zealand as a destination.
Travel Trade
Working with the overseas travel trade is also an important aspect of the work that Tourism New Zealand does. This is looked after by the Operations team, the second-largest team at Tourism New Zealand.
The team includes the overseas offices and a support team in Wellington. Various training initiatives both on and offshore are implemented by this team, including small group training sessions, itinerary planning and familirisation activities.
The team also manages Tourism New Zealand's travel trade website - www.traveltrade.newzealand.com. The site was developed to provide international travel sellers with the information they need to sell a New Zealand holiday. It includes detailed regional information, new product and itinerary suggestions, online training modules, trade brochure order forms and trade news and events. The site was recently redeveloped.
Tourism Development
The Tourism Development team works with the New Zealand industry on capability issues, such as quality, information provision, policies and planning.
Corporate Communications
Corporate Communications deals with external and internal communication, making sure that Tourism New Zealand’s stakeholders are informed about tourism and Tourism New Zealand activity. This incorporates external publications and websites.
