Market Overview
While the Taiwan market is valuable to New Zealand tourism, contributing more than $45 million to New Zealand's economy, visitor arrivals have been in steady decline since 1995. Recent arrivals statistics reflect an overall decrease in outbound travel from Taiwan, a trend that is expected to continue as consumer confidence remains low and concerns about the economic crisis, H1N1 Influenza A (Swine Flu) and domestic political uncertainties impact willingness to travel.

Eighty five per cent of Taiwanese visitors will visit New Zealand as a sole destination on their holiday and just under two thirds will travel to the regions, beyond the main tourism centres.
Since October 2008 Tourism New Zealand’s work in Taiwan has been managed from its Shanghai office, providing trade marketing support for the Taiwan market. Staff regularly visit Taiwan to will ensure trade have support at key trade events.
While the Taiwan market is valuable to New Zealand tourism, contributing more than $45 million to New Zealand's economy, visitor arrivals have been in steady decline since 1995. In August 2008, the only direct air services between Taiwan and New Zealand were suspended when EVA Airways withdrew services.
January, February and July are peak travel months from Taiwan, with May and June being the quietest. With a median stay of eight days and an average per person spend of $2,719, visitors from Taiwan are some of the biggest spenders per day whilst in New Zealand.
Recent arrivals statistics reflect an overall decrease in outbound travel from Taiwan, a trend that is expected to continue as consumer confidence remains low and concerns about the economic crisis, H1N1 Influenza A (Swine Flu) and domestic political uncertainties impact willingness to travel.
