Be Prepared

Walking one of New Zealand’s 9 Great Walks will be a memorable experience but in order to ensure it is also a safe one please follow the Department of Conservation’s simple tips:

  • Choose a trip that suits your skills and abilities and those of your group.
  • Have warm and waterproof clothing. Dress in layers and be prepared for all conditions.
  • Take high energy food, a survival kit, first aid kit and emergency communication equipment.
  • Always check the latest information about facilities and conditions at the nearest Department of Conversation visitors centre before you set out.
  • Leave your trip intentions with a responsible person.

Booking Independently

If you want to book a Great Walk independently you need to do so directly with the Department of Conservation where you will require a Great Walks Pass. The fee for this varies between each Great Walk, but all prices are very reasonable as they are heavily subsidised in order to foster participation by many people.

For some Great Walks you may need to make a booking, for others simply purchase a Great Walks hut or campsite pass before your trip.
