The British Travel Awards is the largest awards programme in the UK created to reward the best companies in travel. Responsible Tourism Awards 2008
'Overall Winner' & 'Best Destination'
Favourite Country in the World New Zealand has just been named as a world leader in responsible tourism. The Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards recognise destinations and organisations that are making a positive contribution to local cultures, economies and the environment through tourism. New Zealand was nominated alongside 1900 other nominees from around the world.
The judges said: "New Zealand is our overall winner for proving that it is possible to develop a national tourism strategy which uses tourism to help make better places to live and to visit. If more national governments followed their example, tourism would make a much more positive contribution around the world."
The judges recognised Qualmark Green as one of New Zealand’s most important achievements in responsible tourism. Qualmark is New Zealand tourism’s official quality accreditation system and now includes responsible tourism criteria. The launch of Qualmark Green has been an important part of this win. By being the first country in the world to have a fully integrated quality and environmental accreditation system, New Zealand has made it clear that our environment is something we are protecting for the future.

Favourite Country in the World
Readers of the highly acclaimed Condé Nast Traveller magazine rated New Zealand as their favourite country in the world as part of the 2008 Reader's Travel Awards.
The win makes it the fifth year in a row that New Zealand has been ranked in the top five favourite countries by the publication's readers.
Top 100 awards
New Zealand, with a total satisfaction score of 95.11 percent, also listed third overall in the ‘Top 100’ section of the awards which includes cities, airports, hotels and other sectors within the tourism industry.
