Since it began, the Seattle-based OneWorld challenge has been plagued by controversy - synonymous with the America's Cup.

While allegations of secret stealing bounce off the walls of the OneWorld building, the sailors inside are trying to keep out of it.

On the water, it's full steam ahead. OneWorld is the first syndicate to have its full complement of new boats for the regatta. The two-tone blue USA-65 and USA-67 have been training on the Hauraki Gulf since March.

The engine rooms of the boats are run by some of the gutsiest New Zealand sailors around - Andrew Taylor, Craig Monk, Matthew Mason and Jeremy Scantlebury - men who helped the black boats win the last two America's Cups, but wanted a new challenge.

One of New Zealand's great boat designers, Laurie Davidson, went with them.

The sailing world was taken aback by the chequebook raid by OneWorld boss, telecommunications billionaire Craig McCaw.

For a while it looked as though the campaign would struggle financially, but now McCaw has gained the support of one of the world's richest men, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
