Escape to Golden Bay. You really need to spend at least a week or more in Golden Bay-to visit the rugged beauty at its northern most tip & the numerous beaches that stretch from Farewell Spit to the golden sands of Totaranui at the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park. At Farwell Spit or Onetahua as it was named by early Maori in the area, a 26km long arc of sand dues stretches in an eastward direction as a protective arm on the northern side of Golden Bay. The area is a resting place for migratory birds such as the godwits, while its tip is home to a gannet colony. Golden Bay's hinterland reaches into the Kahurangi National Park where you find a diverse landscape along the Heaphy Track, the rugged wilderness for the hardy to escape to.
