Canterbury Plains, South Island
The sheep, grain and mixed farms of the Canterbury Plains create a colourful patchwork pattern for air travellers to Christchurch. The Plains on the eastern side of the Southern Alps are the largest stretch of flat land in New Zealand. A series of wide braided rivers, offering jetboating and fishing, flow from the Southern Alps to the sea.
