Tongariro Crossing scenery.
You’ll need a whole day to complete the Tongariro Crossing, and a reasonable level of fitness, but the amazing sights make it all worthwhile. The barren volcanic landscape is punctuated by vividly coloured lakes, steaming fumaroles and lava formations. The area served as Mordor in the Lord of the Rings movies – it’s easy to see why.
