Vineyard and Te Mata Peak

A few decades ago, the Heretaunga Plains were farmland. Today, the Hawke's Bay landscape is all vineyards and wine.

Beyond the vineyard panorama lies the distinctive shape of Te Mata Peak. According to Maori legend, the peak is the body of giant Maori chief - Te Mata O Rongokako - who died while trying to eat his way through a hill to win the love of a beautiful maiden.
