Cape Reinga

There has always been something special about journeying to the top – and the northern end of the North Island is no exception. But there’s more to this place than a geographical landmark. Maori spirits are said to travel after death to the pohutukawa tree on Cape Reinga. Sliding down a root to the underworld below, they head northward to the ancestral land of Hawaiiki-a-nui.
