Jackson Bay, Westland
The road south from Haast is often named one of the West Coast's 'best kept secrets' by travellers. It crosses a coastal plain until it reaches Jackson Bay, a remote fishing village where fur seals and penguins greatly outnumber the humans. There are some good walks in the area, including an old pioneers’ track that leads to Smoothwater Bay.
