Captain Cook statue, Gisborne

There are two monuments honouring Captain Cook in Gisborne. This one is most definitely Cook, but the other statue on Kaiti Hill is known as the ‘Crook Cook’, because it’s actually an Italian naval officer. Captain Cook’s midshipman Nicholas Young sighted the east coast of the North Island on 6th October 1769. Two days later Cook landed at Kaiti Beach.
