Gairlock Shipwreck, near Oakura
Discover the rusted skeleton of the Gairloch, a coastal steamer that ran aground on a moonless night in 1903. When on a voyage from Onehunga to Kawhia, Raglan and Wanganui, loaded with general cargo and timber, the steamer Gairloch was wrecked on January 5, 1903 on Oakura Reef. The wreck can be inspected off State Highway 45, at the lower end of Timaru Road.
