Mist on Lake Rotorua Eleven volcanic lakes sparkle in the landscape around Rotorua. They were formed by cataclysmic volcanic activity that continues to transform the landscape today. Many of the lakes are wound into Maori legend and history - you'll hear stories of phantom canoes gliding in the mist, and of the heartsick Hinemoa who swam Lake Rotorua to be with her love, Tutanekai.
