Casting by the waterfall Turangi, a town that proudly calls itself the trout capital of the world, is situated on the Tongariro River, which yields up to 900 tonnes of trout each year. Turangi provides facilities for cleaning, smoking, freezing and vacuum packing. Local restaurants are also happy to cook your trout catches for dinner. The Tongariro Trout Hatchery, just south of Turangi, has an underwater viewing chamber and information centre. Photo credit: Kieren Scott
