Surat Bay, Catlins
From Owaka on the Catlins coast you can drive to Surat Bay, a hauntingly beautiful beach named after the Surat, a ship that was wrecked in the area in 1874. Fur seals, sea lions and elephant seals live along this coast. If you meet one on the beach, keep your distance – use the zoom feature on your camera for a close up.
