Lake Tarawera and Mt Tarawera


One of eleven major lakes in the Rotorua region, Lake Tarawera is deep and clear, and renowned for its trout population. Trout are an introduced species to New Zealand waters, and have thrived in the Rotorua region, drawing anglers from the around the world.

The 1882 eruption of Mt Tarawera, located in the distance, raised the level of the lake by 12 metres.
