Jet boating, Manawatu Gorge

The Manawatu Gorge is unusual because its river flows from one side of a mountain range to the other, rather than from a divide as most rivers do. The Maori people named the gorge Te Apiti (the narrow passage) and the river Te Au-Rere-a-Te-Tonga (the rushing current of the south). Jet boat tours of the gorge depart from the Ferry Reserve near Woodville. Shorter rides begin at the Ashhurst River bridge.
