Giant kauri, Waipoua Forest

Kauri trees can grow to more than 50 metres tall, and their trunks can measure up to 16 metres around. Trees like this one covered much of the top half of the North Island when humans first began to colonise Aotearoa, around 800 years ago. Waipoua Forest, between Dargaville and Opononi, is one of the best places to have a close encounter with a giant kauri tree.
