The protectors
Today, the carved prow of the Maui waka forms the intricate waterways of the Marlborough Sounds. Pou (carved posts) near Waikawa stand as protectors at the bow of this great canoe. Around the base of the forest-covered hillsides, the clear waters and sandy coves of the sounds offer idyllic surroundings for kayaking, boating, hiking and mountain biking.
