Spring in New Zealand

Spring in New Zealand is a season of colour, new life, new harvests of food and wine and exciting arts and cultural events.

Heralded by lush green paddocks, farmers’ markets heaving with fresh produce and powder fresh snow, spring is an ideal time to visit New Zealand.

Renowned for its spectacular scenery and unique landscape, New Zealand comes alive in spring. This is also the season to see the country’s gardens at their best.

Whether it’s yellow daffodils, rhododendrons or native plant life like the clematis, kowhai and unfurling koru frond, new life is evident almost everywhere. The range of garden festivals prevalent during September, October and December, such as the Ellerslie International Flower Show, Hunter’s Garden Marlborough and Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival are a testament to this.

Greener pastures also make for an abundance of fresh local produce and wine, making spring the ideal season to journey along New Zealand’s many food and wine trails. Farmers’ markets are a Saturday morning highlight in many regions, and many vineyards celebrate the release of the new season’s wine.

New Zealand’s art and cultural scene also thrives in spring with a range of jazz, film and arts festivals, as well as the iconic Montana World of WearableArt in September.

Spring provides clear, settled days for those wanting to explore the outdoors. Crisp spring weather and less crowds make it a good time to explore some of New Zealand’s walking tracks. Along the coast, crystal clear, calm water provides the optimum setting for diving, kayaking and other water sports.

Further adventure can be found on New Zealand’s ski fields. Spring skiing in New Zealand offers more opportunities for sunny, clear days on the slopes. The ski season continues through until October, giving thrill seekers an extended chance to experience uncrowded fields and the opportunity for off-piste skiing, snowboarding and heli-skiing.
