Spring powder

The Southern Alps glisten with fresh spring snow, and the buzz of enthusiastic spring skiers is unmistakable.

Bigger than the Swiss, French and Austrian Alps combined, the Southern Alps stretch 2000 metres high across the South Island. They are internationally recognised as a premiere heliskiing destination, and reasonably fit skiers don't have to be experts to enjoy the experience.

There are three main heliskiing areas in New Zealand, with the season operating well into October.

Methven, located an hour's drive from Christchurch International Airport, includes the popular Mount Hutt ski area and provides spectacular heliskiing amongst peaks and glaciers in the heart of the Southern Alps.

At Mount Cook National Park, the Tasman Glacier provides a 12 kilometre run amidst the peaks and ice falls of New Zealand's highest alpine wilderness.

The lakeside tourist towns of Queenstown and Wanaka provide the base for many heliskiing operators. Steep peaks and chutes and wide, open treeless bowls of powder provide excellent spring skiing.
