Eeling
Eeling is a favourite pastime of children, who sit around waterholes to lure their avaricious prey. Eels are also a traditional catch and food of the Maori people. Commercially, small-scale eel fishing began in New Zealand in the early 1940s when several individuals experimented with the export of canned eels to China. These days, the fishing industry sees enormous potential for the eel fishery through sustainable management and enhancement. International markets are strengthening, with Asia and Europe showing increased demand for eel products. There is an Eel Management Plan throughout New Zealand to ensure the stocks remain at sustainable levels.
