Karori Wildlife Sanctuary

An inner city slice of native paradise is not what you expect to find in a Capital city but the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary is just that. Claiming a 500 year vision to return this area of Wellington to its pre-human state, the Sanctuary has spent millions to date developing 252 hectares of native forest into a predator free area complete with state of the art predator proof fencing. Native flora and fauna have been reintroduced including rare NZ flightless birds the Weka and Kiwi.

The Sanctuary is a unique protected natural area for New Zealand's endangered wildlife. Over 35 kilometres of bush tracks and paths criss-cross 252 hectares of regenerating forest. There are walks and activities for everyone from children and seniors through to experienced trampers.
