RWC All Black 2007: Neemia Tialata

Neemia Tialata was born on the 15th of July 1982 in Lower Hutt, just north of New Zealand's capital city Wellington. He has earned a reputation as a strong, skilled front-rower and is said to be a strong defender and a bustling runner in the tight exchanges. He made his test debut with the All Blacks against Wales in Cardiff in 2005.

Where are your favourite places in New Zealand?
In the South Island, it would have to be Queenstown. I guess it's something different from Wellington, a bit colder down there. And in the North Island it would be Taupo especially the lake.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I spend a lot of time at home with my family, when I do have the time. Apart from that, I like to just chill out.

Why do you think New Zealand produces such good rugby players?
I guess it's like a religion that's engraved in us when we're little kids. You grow up and see your cousins, your uncles and your brothers playing rugby. You see it on TV and I guess that's what we all aspire to do when we grow up; to become a good rugby player.

What does the haka mean to you?
It means a lot of things to me, but I guess one thing that comes to mind is probably family, my own family and my extended All Black family. It's something that is special to me and whenever I get the chance to get up there and perform it, I do it with all my heart.
When you're performing the haka you don't really take notice of the opposing team. It's a time when you can reflect before you actually get out on the field and do the business.

How important is the 2007 Rugby World Cup to you?
Very important. For a kid growing up in New Zealand, I've always wanted to be in the All Blacks and the next step was actually being in the World Cup Squad. I know from speaking to the rest of the boys, it would be nice if we could get out there and win it. It's going to be a tough road but I guess if we can prepare well, there's no reason why we can’t come out on top.
