Note: Many luxury hotels and lodges offer spa facilities. These are not included in this list, which is a selection of those available only.

Kimi Ora Spa Resort
Kimi Ora is located in native bush at the foot of the popular Abel Tasman National Park, with views of the golden sands of Kaiteriteri beach. Described as a 'wellness experience', the spa has a range of massage treatments available including body wraps, oxygen treatments and an underwater massage in a specialised bath.

Accommodation is in chalets ranging from one-bedroom to luxury honeymoon suites to units that sleep up to nine people. Included among the activities available are tennis courts, pools, gym and climbing wall - and, of course, hikes in the nearby Abel Tasman Park. Others include trout fishing, horse riding, paragliding, sea kayaking and balloon rides.


Kina Colada

Guests or day spa visitors can enjoy the salt water swimming pool, Finnish sauna or steam room or luxurious health or beauty treatment. The proprietors offer a wide range of massage treatments, facials, body-wraps, pedicures, manicures and mineral baths. Kina Colada is located on Kina Peninsula overlooking Tasman Bay close to Nelson and the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks as well as numerous local beaches, shops, cafés and restaurants.


Te Ara Wanaka
A holistic adventure retreat that aims to encourage people to explore their potential through adventure. By day, clients experience activities such as kayaking, mountain biking, abseiling, walking etc; by night they explore meditation, yoga, reflexology and aromatherapy.


Vida
An holistic rural retreat set in remote bush area in the Coromandel (Rangihau Valley), offering a range of therapies including hypnotherapy (from two qualified hypnotherapists) and Reiki, an ancient healing art that focuses on spiritual, mental, emotional and spiritual energy. The location is around two hours' drive from Auckland, or a 30-minute scenic flight.


Koura Lodge
A lakefront retreat featuring Finnish sauna, lakeside spa and massage. The lodge has its own jetty for fishing trips and a golf course is nearby.


Tira Ora Lodge
Tire Ora Lodge is an option for those who wish to dispense of luxury and truly getting back to nature. Located in Havelock, Tira Ora is set in 550 acres in the isolated Pelorus Sound. There you can climb rocks, bathe in waterfalls, create art or make music. Transport to the lodge is by air or sea (you can be collected by water taxi).


Bushland Park Lodge
Bushland Park Lodge features Nickel Strausse, styled in the fashion of a German black forest winery restaurant. Bushland Park is set in native forest in the Wentworth Valley, on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. The area features waterfalls and glow-worm grottos and Whangamata beach nearby. On-site treatments include hydrotherapeutic spa, sauna, massage and yoga, tai-chi. An 18-hole golf course is nearby.

Spas/Health Retreats without accommodation

Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa
Hanmer Springs is 90 minutes north of Christchurch and has attracted visitors since 1859. The natural springs sit in an alpine setting surrounded by native bush. The reserve features seven open-air thermal pools, three sulphur pools, private pools, sauna and steam rooms and family pool with waterslides. Therapeutic massage and other treatments are available. There would be few places in the world that could match the sensation of sitting in a hot thermal pool surrounded by snow.


Polynesian Spa
Probably New Zealand's best-known spa, being in one of the most popular tourist destinations, Rotorua. The spa has 35 natural hot water mineral pools, featuring a family spa, private pools, adult pools and the Lake Spa Retreat.

The Lake Spa Retreat offers exclusive bathing in four hot mineral natural rock pools. The pools look out over a garden setting and beyond to Lake Rotorua.

Maori revere the health benefits of these natural spas, which emanate from one alkaline spring and one acidic.

The Polynesian Spa has expanded the services it offers over recent years to make it a world-class health spa. Its treatments include the Aix massage (pronounced ‘aches’ which features a soak in the beautiful and progressively warmer alkaline pools, and features water therapy massage given with warm coconut oil under a Vichy shower.

A range of full spa therapies is available in eight treatment rooms.


Taupo Hot Springs
Taupo Hot Springs have their source in Waipahihi spring, about one kilometre under the ground surface. The water is heated underground and not exposed to geothermal activity, and does not have a sulphur smell. The Taupo Hot Springs have many minerals, including calcium, magnesium, sodium bicarbonate and potassium. The facility also provides massage, pedicure, manicure, reflexology and acupuncture.


Servilles Spa
New Zealand's only European style day spa, with full service in a purpose-designed location in Auckland.


Body Sanctum Day Spa
Body Sanctum is situated in the centre of Queenstown and features a spectacular view of the Remarkables mountain range. It specialises in massage techniques, beauty therapy, makeup and hair treatments.

Onsen Hot Pools
Onsen Hot Pools in Queenstown takes inspiration from traditional Japanese bathhouses. Located cliffside at Arthurs Point, 10km from the centre of Queenstown, the pools offer views of the Shotover river and Remarkables mountain range.

There are six private pools available, each featuring a retractable roof for an indoor/outdoor experience. The cedar-lined bathing rooms include shower and changing facilities.

Onsen Hot Pools opened in July 2007 and are Queenstown’s only public hot pools.
