Best time for hiking
In spring, New Zealand's vast mountains are usually more accessible for hikers, with receding snow, longer daylight hours, and warmer conditions.
South Westland Weheke Area ranger Gary Patterson says spring trampers can benefit from getting out there before the summer influx of visitors.
The Department of Conservation's outstanding bush tracks and back-country huts in the area are maintained to a high standard during this time of year in preparation for the summer peak.
The warmer conditions also mean that ski touring on the Fox Glacier Neve (the top of the glacier Valley) offers softer spring skiing conditions with good runs between alpine huts.
