Railway coffee cups

Driving Creek Railway in the Coromandel region boasts a narrow gauge mountain railway, 14,000 planted native trees, a pottery studio and railway coffee cups.

Barry Brickell said goodbye to city life back in 1961 to move to the Coromandel where he spent the next 25 years creating a railway that has become New Zealand’s well known Driving Creek Railway. Barry originally built the railway to bring the clay and pine wood fuel down to his pottery studio.

The vision behind the railway and pottery complex is Barry’s passion for combining art, conservation and engineering. Not only has he constructed the narrow gauge railway, he started a major forest restoration project and established New Zealand’s most versatile pottery, sculpture, tile and brick-making workshop.

The three-kilometre train trip has spectacular panoramic views from the top. An elevated viewing room, the 'Eyefull Tower' offers great views and a good railway tea or coffee in a railway cup. The cups are made by local potters.
