Hamilton Gardens Festival 2009 - Hamilton

Hamilton Gardens covers an area of 58 hectares and is the most popular visitor attraction in the region with about 600,000 visitors each year. The Hamilton Gardens Festival celebrates music, arts and gardening with events including visual arts, comedy, dance, theatre, film, opera and classical concerts set in a garden background.

Festival of Flowers 2009 20th Anniversary - Christchurch
20 February - 16 March 2009
Internationally renowned as the 'Garden City', Christchurch celebrates its floral surroundings with the Festival of Flowers. The festival features more than 30 events in venues around the city, a 20m floral carpet runway in Christchurch Cathedral with nearly 10,000 fresh flowers, and floral carpets on the Avon River banks.

Heroic Gardens Festival - Auckland

More than 20 stylish private inner-city gardens - from contemporary courtyards to chic entertaining spaces - are open to the public as part of the annual Hero Gay and Lesbian festival. Many gardens have featured in magazines and on television, and most of the garden owners will be present to talk about their gardens.

Now in its 13th year, the Ellerslie International Flower Show is New Zealand's largest gardening event, attracting more than 70,000 visitors. Previously held in Auckland, this event showcasing modern New Zealand landscape design and horticulture is now based at Hagley Park, in Christchurch.

Spring Festival - Wellington

The annual Spring Festival - the opportunity to experience Wellington's Botanic Garden and Otari-Wilton's Bush at their most vibrant - includes more than 40 events and activities. The festival starts in a blaze of colour with Tulip Sunday and features workshops, concerts, guided walks, demonstrations, amazing floral displays, entertainment and more.

Dunedin Rhododendron Festival - Dunedin
Date: 18 - 26 October, 2009
The week-long Dunedin Rhododendron Festival offers more than 50 events, including wine and food tastings in the Larnach Castle gardens, art in Glenfalloch gardens, garden tours and demonstrations. Dunedin has an ideal climate for rhododendrons and azaleas which thrive in private gardens, as well as three gardens of 'national significance' - Dunedin Botanic Gardens, Larnach Castle, and Glenfalloch Woodland gardens.

Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival - New Plymouth
30 October - 8 November 2009
One of New Zealand's longest-running garden festivals, the Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival will celebrate 22 years in 2009 with guided walks, celebrity speakers, workshops and 50 open gardens, including 16 gardens of 'regional' and 'national significance'. Located throughout the Taranaki region, festival gardens have been assessed by the New Zealand Gardens Trust for design, plants and planting, maintenance, construction and overall impression.

The festival includes an annual art auction, workshops and a garden fete in Blenheim.
