Family-friendly day with entertainment including pumpkin rolling, and a chance to learn about native New Zealand plants and bugs. The Auckland Botanic Gardens is home to over 10,000 plants from around the world, spread out over 64 hectares in Manurewa, South Auckland.

Burst! Festival of Flowers 2010 - Christchurch

Internationally renowned as the 'Garden City', Christchurch celebrates its floral surroundings with the Festival of Flowers. More than 30 events run in venues all around the city, with highlights including ikebana, flax weaving, garden tours and a tree-climbing competition. A summer poets’ soiree will mark the festival’s 21st birthday.

Heroic Gardens Festival - Auckland

Showcasing the work of gay and lesbian gardeners, this festival is open to the public as part of the annual Hero Gay and Lesbian festival. There are city gardens and four large country gardens. Many gardens have featured in magazines and on television, and most of the garden owners will be present to talk about their gardens.

Ellerslie International Flower Show - Christchurch

Now in its 14th year, Ellerslie International Flower Show is New Zealand's largest gardening event, attracting more than 70,000 visitors. International garden designers include multi award-winning Chelsea Flower Show designer Chris Beardshaw who will create Ellerslie’s largest-ever garden, while Japanese designer Koji Ninomiya will design a traditional Japanese garden.

Dunedin Rhododendron Festival

The week-long Dunedin Rhododendron Festival offers more than 50 events, including garden tours and demonstrations, art, food and wine. Dunedin has an ideal climate for rhododendrons and azaleas which thrive in private gardens, as well as three gardens of 'national significance' - Dunedin Botanic Gardens, Larnach Castle, and Glenfalloch Woodland gardens.

Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival

One of New Zealand's longest-running garden festivals, the Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival will celebrate 23 years in 2010. The programme features guided walks, celebrity speakers, workshops and 50 open gardens, including 16 gardens of 'regional' and 'national significance'. Located throughout the Taranaki region, festival gardens have been assessed by the New Zealand Gardens Trust for design, plants and planting, maintenance, construction and overall impression.

The festival includes an annual art auction, workshops and a garden fete in Blenheim.
