Adventurous Clothes

New Zealanders’ love of the outdoor lifestyle and adventure has led to the international success of numerous outdoor clothing brands that combine outdoor wear with fashion. Best known universally of these is Line 7, a range of excellent quality, fashionable yachting clothing.

Other labels include Canterbury - best known for sports jerseys and classy casual apparel - and Fruition, the snowboarding label created by former New Zealand Olympic snowboarder Pamela Bell. Others of note are Icebreaker (which specialises in fine merino garments), Earth, Sea and Sky, and Kathmandu.

Fairydown is also highly successful internationally, and its sleeping bags were used by Sir Edmund Hillary and son Peter on their successful ascents of Mount Everest, 37 years apart. Rising labels are Board of Authority, Sub 20 Snowboarding (STS); Totally Board and Outdoor Heritage (Rodd & Gunn, and Logan).

The eponymous outdoor clothing New Zealand is well-known for, the Swanndri, is a Kiwi cultural icon. Not exactly what you’d call high fashion, Swanndris are a wool garment that symbolise New Zealanders’ link with the land. They are highly practical garments for outdoor activity when in the colder months.
