New Zealand merino wool is being used in the fashion houses of Yves St Laurent and Ralph Lauren as well as by several leading international fabric manufacturers and knitwear companies including Italian suit manufacturer Loro Piana and American suitmaker Oxford Clothes. Around 700 merino growers in New Zealand produce 8000 tonnes of merino wool annually, which represents 5% of all wool produced, but 15% of income. Merino is a superb, fine and durable fibre. In microns it measures between 13 and 24, compared to a human hair, which is around 60 microns.
