City Meets Country Vineyards
- European Influence
West and north of Auckland are two sub-areas of the Auckland wine region. Henderson and Kumeu were two of the first areas to be planted after European settlers established homes there and craved the food and wine of their homeland (winemakers and vineyard names reflect this heritage). There are several well-established major wine producing companies in the area including Kumeu River, Matua Wines and Coopers Creek. North of Auckland the boutique Matakana wine area is new and gives visitors a chance to participate in a wine trail
- Jazz and Summer in the Auckland wine region
During summer, cellar doors are open seven days and steady streams of wine tasters visit. Coopers Creek sets the ambience with jazz performances in the summer sun on Sundays. The garden of native New Zealand plants is well established with areas for alfresco afternoons, petanque and barbecues. The garden also has an outstanding collection of sculptures by New Zealand artists. An annual exhibition is held in the delightful Coopers Creek winery landscape
- Western Auckland Wine Trail
This includes an exotic mixture of nature and indulgence from the wild West Coast. Admire the pounding surf of Muriwai beach and the headland colony of wild seabirds as you enjoy native tree honey and fine wine
- Waiheke Island
Small boutique wineries are just a half-hour ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Waiheke Island’s passionate winemakers have developed outstanding vineyards producing quality wines, predominantly red. Premier estates include Goldwaters, Stonyridge, Waiheke Vineyards and Te Whau
