Organic New Zealand
Clean and green, wholesome and healthy, New Zealanders are keen producers of organic food, wine and beer. Many chefs believe that the taste of organic produce is superior, while others support organic farming's environmentally sustainable practices. A passion and enthusiasm for nature and the environment is what drives the organic farmers, horticulturalists and vintners.
Along with organic production, many New Zealand manufacturers have a commitment to reducing negative effects on the environment, by using minimal packaging, and recycling where possible.
Organic Viticulture
- Seresin Estate, Marlborough, has a reputation for fine organic wines and olive oils following the philosophy of owner Michael Seresin. A filmmaker based in London, Seresin owns and operates the estate, and his delightful property at Waterfall Bay on the Queen Charlotte Sound is the venue for special celebration dinners.
Organic Foods
- Kaiwhenua Farms, Hawke's Bay (part of Te Awa Farm winery), is recognised as a leader in organic vegetable growing, and its produce is served at the winery restaurant and exported overseas.
- Green Market, Kaiwaka, is an organic market where people can buy fruit and vegetables, dry goods, cheese, eggs, herbs, and dried and fresh flowers.
- Koanga Gardens, Northland, is home to dedicated and passionate Kay Baxter, who has worked hard to establish a garden collection for the protection of heritage plants including fruits and vegetables. Seeds are available for purchase.
- Phoenix Organic is 'owned by a bunch of real people who are turned on by the desire to produce the coolest, tastiest organic and natural product in a way that takes care of our planet' (source: www.phoenixorganics.co.nz). Products include juices, jams, jellies, chutney, relish and salsa. Based in Auckland.
- Harmony: Organic Meat & Poultry New Zealand is the first bio-grow certified organic meat processor in New Zealand. Animals are all free-range and farmed under the strictest animal welfare regulations. Meat includes beef, lamb, chicken and pork. Special transport is used to ensure the animals are stress-free.
Organic Beer
- Founders Brewery. This Nelson-based boutique brewery recently won the title of Champion Small Brewery in the Australian International Beer Awards 2002, beating 421 beers from 70 breweries in 19 countries. Organic beers include Long Black, Tall Blonde and Redhead.
