Women of wine

Jane Hunter (Hunter's Wines) and Michelle Richardson (Richardson Wines) are two New Zealand winemakers at the pinnacle of achievement in the wine industry.

Jane Hunter is one of New Zealand's most respected viticulturists and has contributed to the country's impact on the international wine community. Jane has been owner, viticulturist and managing director of Hunter's Wines since 1987.

Hunter's Wines has won more than 100 gold medals in national and international competitions, including the Marquis de Goulaine Trophy for the best sauvignon blanc in the world at the 1992 International Wine and Spirit Competition. In 2003 Jane was the inaugural winner of the Women in Wine Award at the Guildhall in London.

The Hunter's vineyards are managed using sustainable production methods.

Michelle Richardson's extraordinary talent and experience saw her overseeing winemaking for the Villa Maria group, before moving on to work with Peregrine Wines, in Central Otago, and then founding her own label - Richardson Wines - in 2004.

Richardson Wines produces small batch high quality wines, and Michelle continues to consult to several small producers. The award-winning Wild Earth Pinot Noir - 'Top International Pinot Noir' and 'Top International Red Wine' at the 2008 International Wine Challenge - was one of her blends.

Richardson's achievements include being named Winemaker of the Show at the New Zealand Wine Society Royal Easter Show in 1997, 1998 and 2000; and New Zealand Winemaker of the Year at the Australian Winestate Awards in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
