New Zealand - home of the happy glamper

Even the most seasoned outdoor adventurer will find something challenging in the rugged New Zealand landscape - however there's also plenty on offer for those who prefer a softer take on a kiwi camping experience.

The idea of heading into the heart of nature is an enticing thought for most human beings. However, the reality of insect bites, roaming wild animals and canned food as staple cuisine tends to interrupt the dream many have of crisp morning air and lazy evenings around the campfire. Is it really worth it?

Glamorous camping
Step in 'glamping' - short for glamorous camping - an emerging niche in the global tourism market for those who want to do it rough without doing it tough.

Helicopter transfers, gourmet meals freshly prepared at the campsite, and hotel class accommodation at the end of a long trek are but a few luxuries that help describe a glamping experience.

With extensive native bush in close proximity to major town centres, New Zealand is uniquely positioned to cater for the glamping market.

Off the beaten track haven
"We have so many places where you have access to beautiful natural locations that are not too far off the beaten track and have good accommodation and dining options nearby," says Dean Overend, general manager of the Marlborough Sound's Portage Resort.

The Portage is a haven for glampers walking the Queen Charlotte Track, a stunning multi-stage tramp through the Queen Charlotte Sound. Guests can enjoy a gourmet meal at the resort's Te Weka Lodge before retreating to Kowhai Lodge, The Portage's premier suites overlooking the Kenepuru Sound.

"You get to experience the great outdoors during the day, then stay in 3-4 star accommodation and enjoy a restaurant meal at night as opposed to a DOC (Department of Conservation) hut or basic campsite," says Mr Overend.

Wilderness creature comforts
Further south, Queenstown Rafting’s Landsborough Wilderness Experience is an expedition to the heart of wilderness country - with some creature comforts thrown in of course.

The tour begins with an air transfer to the top of the Landsborough Valley, high into the alpine region of Mt Cook National Park. The rafts are then floated and the three-day journey down the Landsborough River begins.

Empty stomachs are never a problem. At the conclusion of each day's paddling, a gourmet three-course dinner is cooked on an open fire and served by the riverside.

Hardlly your standard bush fare, dishes such as Mediterranean chicken, rice pilaf and butterflied leg of lamb are menu favourites. And with a selection of local fine wine, the ultimate in camp fire relaxation is assured.
