Pacific-inspired Health and Wellbeing

New Zealand's unique geography and volcanic history created a wondrous land where natural hot springs loaded with minerals bubble out of the ground.

Natural springs are often places of spiritual significance for the Maori people, and are sometimes featured in ancient Maori myths and legends. Once Europeans arrived they too began to enjoy and indulge in the hot springs, attributing them with healing powers. New Zealand has a heritage of international visitors travelling to take the cure and luxuriate in health spas.

Rotorua's thermal pools have long been hailed as therapeutic. In 1882 the Pavilion Bath was built, and in 1901 the Duchess Bath (now the site of the Polynesian Spa) was built to celebrate the visit of the Duchess of York. The Bathhouse opened in 1908. Many of the treatments of the earlier times appeared to include suffering as part of the cure, as can be seen in historic photographs at The Bathhouse.

Luckily for modern-day visitors, spa visits are now geared towards re-awakening the senses and enjoying luxurious pampering. Local products, oils and beauty products treat the visitor to a totally New Zealand experience.
