LOHAS in New Zealand

New Zealand - it's green, environmentally conscious, and as a result is a good fit for the new LOHAS trend.

LOHAS stands for Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability, and LOHAS followers take the environment and sustainability into account when making decisions on what to buy, what to eat and where to go.

New Zealand is natural choice
New Zealand is the natural choice as a travel destination for the traveller keen on LOHAS.

From the top of the north to the bottom of the south, New Zealand prides itself on its commitment to sustainability.

Just north of Auckland is the township of Matakana. It was the first New Zealand town to embrace the concept of the slow food movement. The now famous Matakana Farmers Market has some of the best organic food in the country. With its array of fresh produce, from organic wines and cheeses to freshly baked breads, it has become a popular weekend stop for Aucklanders.

The Hawke's Bay Farmers Market is another organic market. Hawke's Bay is situated on the east coast of the North Island, and the market - which takes place every Sunday - is one of the biggest and busiest markets in New Zealand. As well as being popular for organic food, Hawke’s Bay is home to some of New Zealand’s most famous vineyards. Visitors can experience the region's finest food and wine by partaking in one of the many tours.

Enviro-driven principles
Organic principles are not just exclusive to food producers. A number of New Zealand's top wineries are taking the lead and adopting enviro-driven principles.

Marlborough, New Zealand’s largest wine growing region, is home to organic winery Seresin which is renowned for producing premium quality wines with minimal impact on the environment. Nearby Grove Mill, currently produces wines with a carbon zero rating and is working towards becoming fully organic by 2010.

New Zealand's wealth of natural resources has also enabled it to become a producer of natural skincare products.

Living Nature is just one company that exports its 100% natural skincare products and cosmetics around the world. Their success lies in the unique and potent properties of New Zealand honey, clay and extracts from plants such as harakeke (flax), kumerahou and manuka, which contain properties that nourish and protect the skin.

Relax and unwind
For the ultimate in relaxing health experiences, New Zealand’s spas are the perfect place to unwind.

Spa treatments with a New Zealand twist range from pampering mud baths to Miri-Miri, a traditional Maori massage offered at LeSpa in Queenstown.

LOHAS-themed accommodation can be found right throughout New Zealand.

In the North Island's Coromandel peninsula lies Manawa Ridge, a luxury resort constructed naturally from straw bale and mud bricks with rooms featuring open fires and spa baths. Guests can enjoy views over the Pacific Ocean as they dine on organic New Zealand cuisine, or take a walk through native flora and fauna to a private beach.
