Giant squid in Hawke's Bay

Giant squid has never been seen alive, but a fully preserved specimen, named Maximum, can be viewed at the National Aquarium of New Zealand in Hawke’s Bay.

Maximum came from the Hokitika Canyon off the South Island’s West Coast. The most northern sighting of giant squid in New Zealand was  seen off the Wairarapa Coast. Giant squid can reach a length of 13 metres, with a one metre long throat. It is believed that giant squid are transparent when alive and can be found in the ocean at depths of 400 to 600 metres.
