Top sailors Train in P Class Dinghies

Most of New Zealand's top sailors can trace their sailing roots back to an ugly little dinghy called the P class. Since it was designed in 1920 in coastal Whangarei by a weekend sailor named Harry Highet, the P class has become a symbol for New Zealand's passion for sailing. Highet's aim was to design a safe boat for children to sail, which was easily rightable and could not sink. At almost every yacht club in New Zealand, young children can be seen sailing the little snub-nosed boats, with their parents egging them on from the shore. Among the youngsters who championed the P class and went on to show their skill in America's Cup boats are Chris Dickson, Russell Coutts, David Barnes, Lesley Egnot and Team New Zealand's latest skipper, Dean Barker.
