Rum Races, Kiwi Yachtie Tradition

The rum race is a weekly fixture on the calendar of the true-blue Kiwi yachtie. Hundreds of people skip off work an hour or so early on a Thursday (or Friday) afternoon to crew on keelboats, like the Stewart 34, in the local yacht club's rum race. The prize today is what it always has been, a bottle of rum - but for the rum racers it could just as easily be the Auld Mug itself. It is the epitome of a nation mad on sailing - where the number of boats per head of population is higher than any other country in the world.
