Wairarapa

The Wairarapa region (Masterton, Martinborough and Featherston) north of Wellington is sometimes forgotten on the tourist trail, but the area is renowned for its wine, food and lifestyle blocks. There are also some excellent walks on offer including the Putangirua Pinnacles (ranging from one to four hours return); and to Castlepoint, where there is a lighthouse and magnificent limestone cave. The Wairarapa coast has a reputation for being wild and spectacular, while the areas three forest parks (Tararua, Rimutaka and Aorangi) and Cape Palliser seal colony are home to native flora and fauna.
