International contemporary art exhibition to headline Auckland Festival

16 Nov 2006

New Zealand’s largest and most prestigious international contemporary art exhibition, turbulence, will be the flagship visual arts component for Auckland Festival, AK07.

Drawn from a talent pool of 40 local and international artists, the exhibition features a diverse collection of significant works never before seen together.

Located in multiple Auckland galleries, turbulence creates a dialogue between local New Zealand artists such as Shane Cotton, John Pule and Yuk King Ta and internationally acclaimed artists such as Isaac Julien (UK), Phil Collins (UK), Fiona Hall (Australia) and Willie Doherty (Northern Ireland),

Renowned international curator, Victoria Lynn has been placed in charge of the Auckland Triennial bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and experience from her time in the Australian gallery scene.

Lynn says the third Auckland Triennial exhibition will artistically address the condition of cultural and political turbulence in the modern landscape.

‘turbulence includes stories of ancestry and exile; journeys through literal and imagined spaces and reflections upon the fragility of existence and humanity’s capacity for resistance and resilience.’

‘This exhibition is not so much about where one is from or where one is going, but the pervading emotional states that emerge from real and imagined journeys. As an island nation, New Zealand is an appropriate location for such concerns to be exhibited’

Auckland Art Gallery Director, Chris Saines is excited about the scale of opportunity that the exhibition offers, giving visitors access to some of the world’s most innovative new art.

turbulence opens 9 March 2007, with closing dates staggered across the five venues: Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, ARTSPACE, The Gus Fisher Gallery’ St Paul St Gallery, and Academy Cinema.

AK07 is the third Auckland Festival to date and features a line-up of over 60 of the best local and international theatre, dance, cabaret, music, visual arts, indoor and outdoor events between 9-25 March 2007.
