Art Deco era comes to life in Hawke's Bay celebration

01 Nov 2006

The 19th annual Brebner Print Art Deco Weekend is once again set to take the city of Napier back to the days of the Art Deco era from 13-18 February 2007.

Every year, on the third weekend of February, the entire town turns back the clock and dresses in their deco finest.

Vintage cars, vintage planes, picnics, concerts, street parades, naval ships, dancing in the street, jazz, eating and drinking are part of more than 100 events that make up the celebration. Napier becomes fully immersed in the atmosphere of the 1930s.

The Hawke's Bay region was struck by a 7.8 (richter scale) earthquake on 3 February 1931, devastating the city and cutting the water supply. Following the huge quake fires broke out that could not be quelled without the water supply. What didn't fall down, burned down and the town was flattened.

Remarkable community spirit prevailed and the town was almost completely rebuilt in two years. The style that predominated was Art Deco, which was popular at the time and provided strong reinforced concrete with decoration that would not fall off and injure people as had happened with the Edwardian style buildings pre-earthquake.

The Art Deco Trust was formed in 1985 to preserve and promote what is now recognised as a world-class collection of Art Deco architecture. Art Deco Weekend is one way that the Trust brings the Art Deco era to life in a huge community celebration.
