Stairway to Hump Heaven

18 Jul 2006

The 'Heli Hump' is a new way for people to experience the Hump Ridge Track without having to walk the whole track.

From Tuatapere, guests are flown by helicopter along New Zealand's south coast and up to the Hump Ridge hut complex, staying in their own private cabin with a super king size bed, ensuite, gas heater and veranda.

A gourmet hamper can be provided or guests can bring their own supplies and cook their meals in the cabin's kitchen. Alternatively, a chef can be flown in to prepare meals.

The Hump Ridge is situated in the south west corner of New Zealand and the hut complex offers views of the south coast and mountain ranges deep in Fiordland National Park.

'It's not quite the mile high club but pretty close,' says Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track general manager Evan Bloomfield.

'We saw a gap in the market. Lots of couples just want to get away and haven't got the time to do the whole walk. This way they can drink up the views and alpine scenery without having to walk up the hill,' says Bloomfield.

The 'Heli Hump' was launched in July 2006 and packages can be tailored depending on time available and how much walking people want to do.
