New Zealand: Youngest Country On Earth

01 Oct 2007

In a bold move Tourism New Zealand is staking its claim as the youngest country on earth.

In the latest drive to promote itself to the world, Tourism New Zealand has enlisted the support of the country's leading historian and researcher, Professor James Belich to back up the 'youngest country' claim.

Belich says while there are other candidates such as Madagaskar, Greenland, and Iceland, he says they were all settled before 1000AD, and on present evidence New Zealand had no inhabitants before 1200AD.

Belich adds that it is a very exciting position to be in. "Our nature might be 100 percent pure but our culture is 100 percent new."

The new campaign also features state of the art digital imagery which brings the youngest country claim to life. From the people who brought you Lord of the Rings, Weta Digital has made the opening sequence of the commercial which includes a mountain emerging from the sea.

Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive George Hickton says the campaign conjures up images of a country that is "fresh and enthusiastic and prepared to give it a go".

He adds: "In a sense it explains why New Zealand does things differently, it explains our enthusiasm and freshness and because we are young we may get it right in the future".
