Endurance Athletes Gear Up For 24 hours of Southern Traverse

16 Oct 2007

Multi-sport enthusiasts will be put to the test in Queenstown in November for the 24hours of Southern Traverse.

The event, which takes its inspiration from the Classic Southern Traverse, is aimed at providing entrants with a short, fun and challenging version of the big event. This year's 24 hours of Southern Traverse will feature trekking, mountain biking and kayaking.

The event will be staged on the tracks, lakes and mountains surrounding Queenstown, but the twist is that entrants won’t know the exact course until the night before of racing.

"We had such an enjoyable time last year while staging our first 24 hours event that we decided to do it again, as well as our more traditional Classic Southern Traverse which will be staged in April in Hanmer Springs," says director Geoff Hunt.

"This year the November 17 event is designed so that all teams finish; for the front of the field there will be intense competition as the athletes race to finish in a time of around 15 hours, while the teams at the back should be able to make the finish in just 24 hours".

Geoff Hunt believes some teams will enter the '24hrs of Southern Traverse' to get a taste of what the three day length race is like.

Early entries close November 5.
